RIDE ALONG CHRONICLES

SPOTLIGHT MONDAY: Emotional Survival

Episode Summary

In today's spotlight, we shine the light on the importance of first responder families’ emotional health. Recently, Vicki and I had the pleasure of meeting Dr. Kevin Gilmartin and attending his class on Emotional Survival. His class offered powerful information on what to look for in behavioral changes with your first responder and how a first responder and their partners or family members can effectively address these changes and encourage mental wellbeing and positive relationships. Dr. Gilmartin's book, Emotional Survival for Law Enforcement: A Guide for Officers and their Families focuses on teaching first responder professionals to survive and live through a police career that cannot be limited to just teaching operational skills. It offers a guide to officers to stay resilient through a career in law enforcement, build relationships with their families, maintain their personal health and wellness and sustain a positive professional attitude. He provided information on signs and symptoms that can take place the longer one is in this career and explained how to deal with the up and down roller coaster of emotions that exist in police work. This book has been offered as a resource in law enforcement agencies, first responder academies and has been used by therapists who treat first responders. We hope you will take an opportunity to use this awesome resource as well. So, come ride along with us!
